No problem with mine, it's labeled "The Concise Oxford Dictionary", hard covered, real paper.

Plus one for looking things up properly!

For spellings, including American usage, the Oxford Spelling Dictionary is cheaper and better.

The following strategies will work for this and all websites so you don't need site-specific checkers. It also means you only need to add new words once.

        Firefox:

        1. Press F10
        2. From the Tools dropdown choose options.
        3. Under general tab scroll down and tick 'check your spelling as you type'.

        Edge:

        1. Go to Settings
        2. type "spell check" (without quotes) in the search bar and hit Enter
        3. You will see the option to enable or disable highlighting or autocorrecting of misspelled words.

        Google Chrome:

        1. Go to Settings.
        2. Scroll all the way down and click on Advanced Settings.
        3. Under Privacy, find out “Use a web service to help resolve spelling errors”.
        4. Turn on the feature by tapping on the slider. The slider will turn blue when the spelling checker is turned on.

        Safari:

        1. Open the Safari app on the Mac
        2. Open a new Safari window and select a text-input box by clicking into it
        3. Pull down the Edit menu and scroll down to “Spelling and Grammar”
        4. Select “Correct Spelling Automatically” so that the check appears next to it

With any browser you may have to choose your local language dictionary under add ons.

Hopefully you are now all fully competent egg-suckers

CTRL+right click seems to be the answer; thanks to whoever mentioned it.

Neil, none of the suggestions address the site specific spelling chucker that is part of the forum setup!

In my case, while Firefox will check my spelling as I type, it won't suggest corrections, even with a dictionary loaded.

My Firefox does …. but as others have pointed out you have to use ctrl-rt-click. (You trip over the local forum software if you just use rt-click).

If I use Ctrl + R Click I get the option for Google to suggest alternatives. This does not like Mark says address the problem of the forum's speller stalling on suggestions.

It used to work OK but all I get now is a red underline as I type.

As I said earlier I don't get all the drop down items when I click the ABC so that may be part of the problem, neil's earlier screen shot shows all in clickable dark text.

Have you tried clicking 'Enable SCAYT'

Thank's Michael, I did try that yesterday but did not notice that it makes the other options bold. However with it enabled I don't even get the "loading" coming up in the suggestions box so almost one step backwards.

When I click options and then language nothing comes up in the box ?

Similar situation on the iPad, I'm afraid

… Yes, you can plug it in

                        … No, it doesn't work

I think the forum's spell checker is way past its 'use by' date.

We can but hope that the stupid 'autocorrection' feature that inserts spurious smiley things will soon also grind to a halt.

I think that we just have to accept this website in all its quaintness. In days to come, people whose hobby it is to recreate pioneering information technology will probably make "models" of it.

Meanwhile for example, the Mach support forum, which probably has about the same number of users, has been remodelled and its native functionality is much better than this site.

But hey-ho, what makes this site so dynamic is the members, their range of capabilities, and willingness to help.

This won't make the forum checker work, it will highlight your spelling errors on any website and right (*or ctrl-right) clicking will allow you to correct them.

If it doesn't work then it is unlikely to be an issue with this site but a more general setup issue.

My understanding is that it's not an "auto-correction feature" but simply that the site has been configured to accept smileys entered via keyboard ascii characters (as well as the drop-down)…..real or false.

This due to the demands of people on other forums here who don't want to use a mouse.

The use of a spell checker is largely useless if the word used, however correctly spelled, is incorrect in the first instance.

Being dyslexic, some posts make no sense, as the simple misuse of a word – 'there, their, the're' for instance, used in the wrong context, completely alters the meaning of the sentence.

And yes I used 'Spelled' allegedly the American English version of the word, as 'Spelt' to me means a type of corn flour.

Over the years I have had to learn 'type speak' and interpret it by using several re-reads in some cases. Nowadays, 'Text speak' is even worse, as in ' C@ s@ on H@ now H@ Fl@ M8', and don't lets start on L33t 5p3ak.

Rather than use a spell checker, try a Thesaurus, which will not only show the correct word to use, but how to spell it correctly.

                                    Regards

We are of course somewhat at cross-purposes here. Mine wasn't an attempt to argue the semantics of "auto-correction feature", rather to to enlarge on what it meant in the terms of this site and its forum software – as explained by the then website lady (Kate?) some time back (quite some …. perhaps back in the DC days). Many later comers might not be aware that it's a site configuration option, deliberately set and not considered a bug. Nor is it likely to change.

Perhaps my fault for not being clearer in what I intended. Apologies if it upset.
