Hi Guys

 

Its not be to long since I finished the rebuild of my Mk1 Super seven. (see photos in my profile)

 

just wondering, Do you guys use the compound slide (set at 90deg) to move the cutting tool along the work or do you use the carriage

 

Mine is a NON power feed super seven

I use the carriage wheel for most applications.

I am also lucky enough to have a leadscrew handwheel (at the tailstock end). That is useful for accurate movements of the saddle.

ICBW but isn't a leadscrew handwheel a standard fitting on a S7?

I have the lead screw hand wheel also.

I have not played with my myford enough to know its tricks, but I have the screw cutting gear box on my Mk1

will turning the lead screw NOT also turn my gears inside of my gear box ???

I think some confusion has arisen here. As Piero has a gearbox equipped S7 then he must have easily variable power feed via the leadscrew to the saddle. What he doesn't have is powered crossfeed. What he is talking about is using the compound (topslide) for facing cuts not longitudinal.

Piero my answer is use the crossslide for tranverse movement of the tool, and leave the compound set parallel to the lathe bed.

You will find that if you move the lever on top of the gearbox to around the centre position there is a neutral point where the gearbox is not engaged. The leadscrew handwheel is helpful in finding this point as you can turn it whilst moving the lever until the handwheel rotates freely. Turning the handwheel while engaging the top lever in any of its 3 positions is also helpful and makes the gearbox mesh easily.   Of course you should never move any of the gearbox levers when under power.

You can "set" the gearbox selector midway between positions A-B. B-C and the leadscrew will no longer turn the gearbox. My topslide is never at 90 degrees, but then I have a DRO.
