I am considering fitting a Handwheel to the leadscrew would it be necessary to remove the drive gears from the screw to make the screw easier to turn.

Could you explain yourself a little better. The ML7 carriage normally has a hand-wheel. Which screw are you referring to? The thread tile is Leadscrew handle, if this is the one (right hand end) then you merely have to remove the locknut (part no 100308), the distance piece (part no 70/1113) and replace the distance collar with the handwheel. You can grip the distance piece if you want to stop the leadscrew rotating whilst you remove the nut.

Kwil, Sorry it is as in the title to the leadscrew not the carriage.

                Hi John & Guys
Using the hand wheel on the leadscrew it’s best to disengage the the drive gears. Having engaged the half nut to use hand wheel it makes life easy . does this photo help

                    Hi John

Just been down the shed / workshop to take this photo. this is the other end. As you can see I have removed the gear on the 2nd stud so you can use the handwheel without turning the gear set up .Note the studs are home made . If you take the leadscrew one off you have to take two off.

Hi Nobby, Thanks for the pic. that is the gear I was considering taking off, I notice you have to take a nut off to remove it mine has a bolt. It seems very dry and clean in your pic. on mine I have it all greased up otherwise on the faster speed when using the power feed it is quite noisy, my ML7 is one of the very early ones.

                        Hi John

As I said the studs & bushes are home made As is is the tailstock etc. having bought with loads of stuff missing ie handles screws Etc for a fiver. I will make sure on assembly I will grease & oil were needed . Slapped wrist. Seeing you photo you may have needed more clearence on the RH side of the tool to get into the corner with a rad for strength

                        Regards Nobby

                          John,

It is good practice to tie the lathe carrier to the drive pin, prevents any real movement of the between centres object.
