Myford M type question

Can anyone tell me what is the distance between centres on the Myford M type lathe?

Hi Brian just measured my M type and i can just get just over 17 inch but there is a long bed type I don't know about.

17 inches is about right on a non-longbed version

Between centres is exactly that, no chuck, centres only

The longbed is about a foot more, officially, 28inches (2 feet 4 inches)

Ebay is your best bet, but an internet search can sometimes yield results

You need to be patient nowadays when you're looking for stuff, it can take a few months for anything decent to appear

I have seen the bed on it's own being advertised a few times too, so you can cobble one together from two lathes but the best scenario is always a complete unit

Longbeds were all late production stuff and were being sold up to the early 1950s so had all the most up to date bits of the design

My only advice would be do not get an early version, even if you're desperate

Tthe headstock bearings in the later versions were far better, ideally don't get a pre war one, get a later one with the v-belt headstock pulleys, not the flatbelt pulleys

Decent drummonds are like buses

Nothing nothing nothing….. then 3 suddenly appear in the same week

The flat belt models work quite well if you use a poly V belt running on the original flat pulleys. But definitely stick with the post-1924 models with the heavier bearings etc. There have been a couple of good ones on eBay UK in recent times so keep an eye out and you might get lucky.
