Ideally there shouldn't be a gap at the top there, The gearbox itself is all on the right hand side, so there won't be an oil leak. But it does suggest that the backplate (the bit on the left hand side) is not properly attached to the gearbox. At a guess, that happened when it was removed from it's previous lathe and can be corrected.

I've never fitted one, or removed the one that's been on my ML7 since 1965. However, the manual shows that the backplate is attached to the side of the gearbox with three Allen screws.

Right thanks, one of the Allen key bolts is missing from the end of my gearbox and I think I can see a washer causing the gap lower down at the front, so my box might well have been apart and reassembled with this washer where it is at some point in time.

              I will investigate.

The top Allen screw was missing and the bottom was fitted with a rogue hex bolt which was too short, hence the gap.

There was no O ring on the back of the box either!

So I will get these items ordered and treat the box to another bush whilst I'm at it.
