ML7 / Super 7 tailstock

Possibly as silly question but can anyone please tell me if an ML7 tailstock will definitely go straight onto a Super 7? There is one on Ebay at the moment with a graduated dial on it – just thinking it would be quite nice and if it has gone by the time I get home I’ll know someone else thought the same!

I have done exactly what you are asking about.

 

I have a Super 7B with a standard tailstock for normal use, but also have an ML7 tailstock which is fitted with the hard to find Cowells capstan rack feed attachment.

 

This is used for when I need to cut small threads with a Coventry die head ( I hate using split dies)

Thanks Phil – I was almost certain it would fit but it’s great to be able to confirm things so easily -I was thinking about the Cowells rack feed……. I’ll keep looking.

Does that mean that a super 7 tail stock will also fit a ML7?

I would say 99% yes, but I have not actually tried it myself.

Yes, it will. I had an ML7 with both original tailstock and S7 Type, tool ejector was useful and drilling much easier. I also replaced original cross and topslide with S7 parts, huge improvement when used with Rodney milling attachment, and much better for turning.

When i got my s7 Mk1 in a sorry state there was no tailstock no x slide feedscrews and dials It was rusting away in a coal bunker next door to my .mate who rang me I picked it up for a fiver that was in 1986 . Could not find one so I fabricated one and made new dials etc I enjoyed doing it in my home workshop using a 1926 pedal driven Exe lathe

The tailstocks will fit the bed OK but it would be wise also to check that the centre height above the bed is the same.

Simple check, compare the height of the centreswhen closed up to the headstock, there might be a few thou difference visible then with a feeler gauge held between the points; if vertical they are the same, leaning towards the headstock makes the tailstock centre high.

According to G H Thomas's book you can't even guarantee that any two S7s or any two ML7s have exactly the same centre height, apparently there were significant differences bewteen some batches. But you my be lucky!

This is and old thread but here goes, I have a S7 that came with a buggered MT2 taper in the tail stock, it won't hold MT2 tails without slipping, I gave it a bash with an MT2 reamer but still no good, too many low points where it has been abused, I also have a ML7 almost complete, I note that the ML7 tailstock is hollow will it work with a draw bar I wonder so that I can use a Coventry die head without it moving. Peter.
