Milling cutter ?

Hi Guys,

Amonst my late fathers "junk" I've found a tin containing numerous milling cutters. Unfortunately all but one are heavily rusted due to years of damp. One, however, wrapped in wax paper survived, stained but still sharp.

I'm curious to know what it might have fitted as I've been unable to identify the taper (per Machinery Handbook).

As I don't have a milling machine I propose to bore a matching taper into a piece of 3/4" bar then after pulling the cutter firmly into the adapter machine the whole beween centres so that I can use it in a 3 jaw chuck

Are you sure it isn't just Morse taper? Perhaps #1?

Hi Murray,

The first thing I did was to try it in my wood lathe which is MT1.

I rattled, in that the narrow part never made contact with the sides before the thick end made contact

ie I think the taper is too blunt for it to be a morse taper.

Hi all,

I descided I could spend an inordinate amount of time trying to find out what the taper was, when all I wanted to do was use the cutter.

So, plan B, bore a tapered hole to match the taper and lock the cutter into it.

Mount between centres and true up the outside.

Job done – works lijke a dream

Anyone know why its not just KIS, 'keep it simple' that makes total sense but the 'stupid' bit, I don't get it.

It's because it's the clever chaps who are most likely to over-complicate matters. The 'stupid' is to remind them that they ain't as smart as they think they are.

Maybe it is, 'Keep it simple and Stupid'. Dealing with the lowest denominator present. It is after all an acronym.

Yanks often say "keep it simple, Sugar". You choose your acronym conversion. When teaching I use "keep it simple, Sir" as an alternative to the "stupid".

​… is about the nearest definition of it for me… I've worked with many an 'Engineer', as will have many members, who have produced designs etc that when applied to site wouldn't work… 'this won't go into there… that won't fit the way it's drawn etc… & so amended drawings appear & the oxy/acetylene gear comes out, hence my usage of the acronym, so ….

An interesting group of replies. I once worked for an American Company, so KISS and the non-politically correct FUBAR were quite common.

I'm reminded of a poster I saw once upon a time which featured numerous weird bolts made to fit 'odd' holes.

None of which were remotely plausible.

I've now managed to mill a 1/2" slot across a piece of mild steel. I have no use for the slot – the whole exercise is part of a learning curve of what I can do with a small lathe.

This or very similar was on the maintainance department wall and apprentices were sent to the stores for one off the list, often to be obtained together with a long stand
