I'm old enough to remember Whistons cat. Darn animal, it sold me a whole load of stuff that sounded great but I never used.

I never met the animal, but I did get one of the last Whiston's Metal Packs via Proops Bros.

All a manner of useful stuff (including the nicest hex you ever machined) and a handful of TIG rods to make up the weight that have removed a succession of car radios and provided a great many BA studs.

I am in Ireland at the moment, visiting friends and only just read your original posting. Reference para 6, I won't be posting to let you know that I received MEW 246 before we set off from the UK!  Neither will I mention that your catalogue V.10 was with it.

ME arrived on Saturday to deepest Southern France – much earlier than usual, so please keep sending the cats…

And I am still using bits of various packs I bought from Whiston although many of my purchases have long since been consigned to the "keep because it might come in useful" bin and 30+ years down the line, I am wondering at what point 'might' will turn into 'will'…..

Actually found an old catalogue recently as part of my post-house move filtering – n°107, Winter/Spring 84 with gems such as "Surplus self tapping screws, 6 x 1/4" hex 1000 for £1.20, 10 000 for £9.60, over 1/2 million available…", and

"3MT left hand twist drill, 37x230mm", and

"Solid tungsten carbide strips 1 7/16"x1/8" wide by 0.055" thick, 47p, 100 for 37.42"…..
