Hi all, I’m looking into a new tool holder as the one I have is the original one and has seen far better days. Myford have told me that if I want to fit one of their later tool holders I will have to change the topslide or modify the one I have with a 7/16 mountain post. Would anyone know what or if a different topslide can be fitted?

      Many thanks

      Jim

Sorry Bernard, I just assumed you all owned a crystal ball😉😂. The lathe I have is a Myford/Drummond 1950 3 1/2 M type. Pics below of the original tool holder.imageimage

It looks like a small 4 way could be made to fit, dimension from slide to base of tool is what’s important. There are some on the bay and RDG sell them as well

Height and angle easy to adjust – what’s not to like? Make another with a slot. No need to round off the side.
You can also make a standard clamp one easy enough.

Myford suggested this one, but I’d have to modify the top plate to fit a 7/16 post mount.

Could you not make a replacement?

If you wanted a 4 way, you could make one by laminating pieces of steel

(i made one for a friend’s 5″ Raglan, To locate it each position, the toolpost had a dowel which located into four, specifically placed holes)

The tools can be clamped using suitable Allen screws.

Re; the ArcEuro toolposts – I have a ‘100’ size and (I’m fairly certain) it’ll be too big* – have a look at their ‘000’ size and see if it’s more to size.

                      *I’m using it on a 280mm/11″ swing machine – it’s very good.

See this post as to what is required to fit the Myford/Dickson to the M-type

The topslide has a thick stud as part of the casting so likely to have to be removed and a smaller stud fitted whatever QCTP you go for.

Would not take much effort to cut some flat bar into strips and make a batch of holders with an open slot on one side then just swap the complet holder over for a quick change. The slot could be milled using the lathe if you don’t have a mill.

Hi Jimm.  I have modified my M Type lathe to take a Dixon toolpost and wouldn’t be without it Jason has given a link to the artical that I wrote a while ago. There is another group which is usfull to Drummond and Myford lathe and machinery owners which it is worth visiting for information and another group of helpfull members as well. I have a page in the files section there with loads of drawings and pictures of the M Type lathe with loads of modifications and upgrades I have done to my lathe and the tooling.

Picture of making a Morse taper spindle for my lathe and you can also see rear toolpost which makes parting off a dodle since i fitted it.

Hi to all that replied. Sorry for the late reply. I have decided to convert to the myford tool holder like Davids. But have a couple of questions. My original holder had a built in angle dial in the base, is there some way of incorporating one into the conversion. Also has anyone any got any recommendations for a decent toolset with 10×10 shanks?

                            Jim.

I would take some careful measurements before getting 10mm shank tools, if like other Myfords tou may bot have the height to fit them and the base of the QCTP holder below ctr height. Glanze via Chronos work for me but buy separates.

I use mostly 10mm tooling in my Dixon toolpost and can get away with 12mm just. I have a 10mm tool which is great for foughing out as you can use the front for diameter turning the left hand side, as the tip sticks out a small amount, for facing and the 45 degree face for chamfering and taking of sharp edges.
