I am looking for some way of securing small screws from vibration etc.

The screws are steel 12BA going into tapped brass and brass nuts.

It is important that the bond is temporary, I want to be able to break it without damaging things. It might be asking a bit much but it would help if it was invisible as well.

Looking at the Loctite website just confuses me more – there are so many different products and I don't know how there properties will scale down to tiny screws. They are not cheap either.

Would a superglue bond be breakable? Do clockmakers use shellac?

Has anybody have any suggestions or experience with this sort of thing?

      Many thanks

      Steve

One of the many thread locking products will be what you are after.

Thread locker. It can be dismantled, if stuborn a bit of heat helps loosen it.
I use a dab of nail varnish as a temporary locker.

For 12BA screws … Loctite 222 is a good place to start

Agreed Michael but I think 221 low viscosity may be better in view of the thread size.

I wouldnt put anything with the loctite threadlock logo anywhere near a 12ba nut or bolt, even their very weak bearing retainer is likely to cause the thread to break, I know this from experience. Try a minute dab of clear silicone sealant first is my advice and I use loctite products almost daily.

                        .

                        Quite possibly, John yes

I really wouldn't want to choose beteween them without considering the detail of the requirement and Steve's preferred method of application.

At the risk of tempting providence: I happen to have 222 in stock, and I've never [yet] had a problem using it on very small screws.
