Little collets

I have several of this type of small collet and have often wondered what they fit. Does anyone have any idea?>>

Overall length is 5/8" and the two diameters at the nose end are 17/32" and 27/64". The diameter at the back end is 11/32".>>

The box they came in contained – amongst other bits – a half finished brass clock face but of course that could be a red herring!>>

They look a bit like the collets we used in right angled windy drills – Desouter ??

I think they are made for the Taig lathe (can't remember what the brand is called over here. I bought a headstock for a dividing head project years ago (based I think on a Tony Jeffree design) with a set – they aren't very well finished are they!

Hi, bit of a hijack here but still on sort of topic!

Found these three small collets at tthe bottom of a crate of tooling this week. Cannot really make out the makers name CLARKE, CLARE, CLOSE ???

Any help please.

27mm long overall; threaded part is 24mm od; maxdiameter is 25.5mm

Afternoon Martin, nice to chat albeit briefly. John, I have checked and it looks like you are right in suggesting TAIG. Having looked at their collets I seem to have the full set of seven.

I agree, the one pictured does look a bit rough but my camera is very good at enhancing imperfections. Its not as bad as the picture shows. Good work chap and thank you!

Clare Collets=Uk makers (Manchester possibly).

Sorry thats about all I know about them personally.

Mmmmm, just looked at them and all three are 1/4"….. not so good.

Clare collets were specifically for Clare milling cutters. They were unthreaded in the area where Clarkson cutters are, but they had a special tongue instead. The idea was that you inserted the cutter into an appropriately-sized collet, twisted it a few degrees to engage the tongue with the collet and then tightened the closing nut.

You can sometimes get Clare collets second-hand, but otherwise the collets are pretty well useless. They'll probably grip a Clarkson or plain cutter reasonably well, but the grip won't guarantee it being pulled out.

We used them back in the 1970s in the apprentice school!
