lever action chuck ?

I acquired a myford lever action chuck with a collet in it from a junk pile, I have no idea what one of these is for, can some one enlighten me ?

Is it something I should keep for when I get a Drummond lathe, or is it Myford only ?

Used for repetition work where every piece is the same size. don't know what else it will fit but I would have thought it's a valuable item, especially if its got the M word on it.

Great time an labour saver if you have anything more than 5 or 6 components to do from same size round stock. Assuming you have the correct size collet.

As it owes you nothing I'd consider it a keeper and start looking for useful to you size collets at suitably economic prices. As ever wit tooling tho' its a question of budget prioritories as no one can afford everything on the wish list.

With only one collet its unlikely to sell for seriously useful money. Generally this sort of thing does better as swop fodder.

What model of Drummond are you going for and why ?

I ask as having owned a 1908 model ( still have it but don't use it) I found the spindle bore very limiting. If it were me I would sell the collet chuck and put that and any other funds destined for the Drummond towards buying something more capable.

I disagree. I’ve got one of these and it’s very useful. It has a separate backplate so you could machine a backplate for a different spindle. The only thing you need to arrange is a tapped hole or bracket for the clevis to bolt into. The other advantage with this type is the collet doesn’t pull back into the spindle so repetitious work that needs the same length is easier. If you do sell it, they actually quite high value.

With a full set of collets I’ve seen one for ?190. With all the collets. I’m sure the collets can be made or found.

I am looking for a Drummond M, I just happen to like old quality machines, and Chinese stuff just looks cheap and nasty to me.

Best way for photos on this forum is to open an album on site, you can then move the image to what ever thread you want to. Don't try to load photos that are too big, I reduce mine to 640 x 427 which seems quite adequate.
