LBSC Mollyette Locomotive Build

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and have started building my O gauge Mollyette loco a few months ago, thought I join up and have a chat with other model engineering builders and learn something along the way as this is my first loco build.

I have cnc machined wheels first and started building up from there. Hope you like what I have done.

Thanks Neil, I found some cast iron at work the right size and just designed them in solid works to a design that looked right and went from there, turned them in the lathe first and then over to the mill, I,m very happy with the look of them. Mark

Hi Mark – very nice work.

Questions: end mill size? (more than one, ball end mill, etc?)

What's the tread diameter of the wheels?

Always nice to see CNC work to help advance our model building.

Hi John,

The wheels are 28.8mm in diameter, i used a carbide 2.5mm slot drill for roughing and a carbide 1.5mm ballnose at 10,000RPM for finishing, i am lucky enough to be able to sneak a few jobs onto the machine at work.

I turned the blanks first , and due to these small cutters only having small flute lengths i machined the back side of the spokes to half depth, flipped the wheels over and machined the other side,i also machined a simple jig with small islands which locate into spokes and has some small clamps that clamp on the wheel rim.

Hi Mark – thanks for the answers.

I have drawn up the Q1 wheels (3-1/2" gauge) but have not machined them yet; right now I'm finishing a 3-1/2" gauge Shay and have been looking at the 3-1/2" gauge Heisler geared locomotive, which has wheels about 50mm diameter.

Although we have one very large shop @work, I do machining at home; my smaller mill will go to 7,000 rpm so it's close. (I do not want to mix work and hobby, for many reasons)

Hi John, i thought i would start off small to test myself and then maybe start something bigger like you have.

I have attached a pic of the boiler i started, all nice and neat until i silver soldered it.

"Dave" was having issues with some of the measurements.

Hi everyone,

I have been chipping at my little loco. Boiler is almost completed. The mechanical's have been through an air test and the little loco came alive without any hiccups. I have attached some pics.
