The Chinese made tooling and inserts are very good, I have many and those WNMG 08 are a common size, available in many grades, I have various steel, stainless and aluminium inserts. If you don't have a pile up and break the entire end off the insert, there will be 6 fresh cutting edges per insert. I get mine from ebay, but the Amazon ones will be identical.

Will a 16mm shank tool fit your Boxford?

If the tool size is a problem, then look out for the WNMG 06 size inserts in a 12mm tool.

I bought a similar tool but to take TNMG inserts. It’s fine and was good value for money. The tool holder is 16mm but I trimmed off 2mm from the bottom to fit my Mini lathe four way. It’s tough steel but can be cut with a carbide end mill. I got some cheap polished inserts for it on Amazon for not much money and they work well.

I have ccmt inserts that have the same 80° tip. When turning, the clearance angle is 5°. If the cutting depth is shallow, the chips get between the workpiece and the insert and the turned diameter is way out of spec. This happens a lot when I do small diameter inner turning. For inner turning I prefer TCMT or DCMT inserts.

Because of the 5° clearance angle, the load on the tip is also a bit higher then when using TCMT or DCMT type inserts (CCMT longer narrow chip). On the not so rigid mini lathe, I prefer TCMT inserts.

I agree with Huub about the TCMT and DCMT style inserts, they have a 7 degree clearance angle and work better with small machines. The only disadvantage is that being single sided, they have fewer edges per insert.

My idea was to mill it down to fit my Boxford. Thank you every one I will go ahead and buy it.

I mill down the 20mm tooling using a 50mm Ceratizit shell mill holding 5 round inserts of 10mm diameter. The steel of every tool from Sandvik, Kennametal, Seco, Korloy and the Chinese no names is very tough to machine, not too hard to file, but I have to rotate the inserts after 2 tools are milled.

I have one of the Chinese imports. It works quite well on my 16" lathe. Because of the insert geometry it may not work so well on smaller less powerful machines.

It depends on the type of insert. The polished inserts should be fine on almost any size lathe.
