Kennedy Power Hacksaw – Springing Back

Hi all,

I've recently acquired a Kennedy Power Hacksaw #60 from an… agricultural setting.

Having spend some time carefully removing all the weird and wonderful agricultural shmoo from every surface and inside the dashpot (eww), inspecting the dodgy brazes and straightening that which had been bent, I find myself with an almost complete and very tidy machine, missing only its spring.

Does anyone who owns or is familiar with one of these fine Carpal Tunnel Avoidance Devices have a fitted correct & working spring they could share the specs of so I can get one ordered?

If you look in my Albums (click on "photos" on the Avatar) on page 2 you will see an album called "Kennedy Hexacut No 6", which contains the maintenance instructions for the saw.

Finding a spring is somewhat haphazard I have found. You need one about 65mm long (coiled part), 10-11mm diameter, and wound from 1-1.5 mm wire. a pull of around 10 lbs/4.5 kg to extend the spring is about right.

If you are in the UK I can send you something suitable to keep you going while you search for the perfect spring.

I didn't know these great little machines had a spring, mine has worked fine without one for the last ten years or so.

For my old Kennedy I used a spring from my spares box …… A Mini accelerator return spring …probably the same age as the hacksaw!
