Did anyone see James May assembling a 1959 Suffolk Colt lawn mower on BBC 4 last night ?

      Richard.

Yes – like watching paint drysad.  It was followed by an interesting programme on the P51 Mustang howeversmiley

I kept my parents gardening implements in good working order with the help of my workshop, i consider it my useful contribution to society..I probably wont get a knighthood for it like he will one day.

So it was, not sure how I missed that. Instead I've just watched it on iPlayer. I'm saving the pennies (and pounds) so that I can fly one.

No, but I did see that absolutely superb model ship on Antiques Roadshow.

Last night was wonderful! Welsh railways, Locomotion, the P-51 Mustang, James May and taking a 747 apart and then reassembling it. With no bits left over! I liked May's comment about women. Deborah agrees…

Haha, I beat him to it by about 43 years. On the BBC program "why don't you…" back in the 70s, I managed it in about 30 seconds. Admittedly there was a bit of editing involved but I could probably beat him reassembling it to this day. Sold my last 3 lawnmowers to buy my first car at 17. Overhauling lawnmowers paid for my first lathe a couple of years earlier. Good old Qualcast Suffolk Colts / Punches…

I think I remember Neil (Stub Mandrel) making a scale model of the engine a few years ago. I also remember him finding one of the engines from this type of lawn mower in a scrap yard about 2009.

                        Les,
Are you implying there may be a renewed demand for the motors. I can't see myself buying a car out of selling my three Suffolks though!!

The car (Honda N600) only cost £50, as it had a dead engine. However, I had one ready to go in, so wasn't long before it was on the road. Used to drive to school in it.

One of the lawnmowers was actually a lovely little 2-stroke JAP engined thing with twin belt drives. The clutch (blades only, no drive) was effected by pivoting the engine and thus tensioning the belts. Sold it to a collector(?) but didn't tell him about the moped thing I had used it for, the one I got knicked on. The copper let me off with a bollocking….

                            I remember that too

I still have the big one (now with a nice cast iron pulley not in the photo), but the little one has about a week's work left to finish it.
