Inspection guage, what is it for?

I got this Starrett inspection tool decades ago from somewhere I can't recall, I never did find out what it was for and it's remained in a tool drawer ever since

I finally found out yesterday but I wonder how many of you will spot it straight away!

The tool is a Starrett No. 459 Cutter Clearance Angle Gage

Yes, you are correct, these are quite expensive according to the info I got elsewhere
