Whatever the majority believes is right you say! What is written down in a catalogue is not real proof of the origin of the items or parts of the items. The company may not wish to divulge that production of parts of their products are made elsewhere, just like Pratt Burnerd! I don`t have time to trawl through the PB catalogue at the moment but i`m sure that you do.

Chris you were the one that mentioned "conspiracy theory"! It never occurred to me.

TOS Kurim is now a subsidiary of the Alta Group in the Czech Republic, along with Skoda Machine Tools (not Skoda cars, which is owned by VAG) and other companies . See the caption on the photo here. You may need to click on the flag at the top right for a translation.

TOS certainly seems to make machinery and tooling, though it is always possible that some work is outsourced to manufacturers in other countries.

Alan, if you're expecting a free trip to the TOS factory, you keep dreaming. With respect, your unnecessarily abrasive and confrontational style in virtually every thread you participate in and your inability to admit when you're wrong only makes you look foolish. It also makes you look like a 'troll' i.e. someone who only posts to stir up trouble. You are to all intents and purposes calling us liars. We have provided evidence that the chucks are made in the Czeck Republic. I'm challenging you to provide ANY evidence that we're wrong. Then, and only then, will I remove you from my ignore list. I have better things to do that invent a conspiracy based on a fact that is so easy to disprove if it were a lie just to best an idiot on the internet and I take personal offence at the suggestion.

Thanks fopr the comments and advice, although not quite what i expected, there's enough for me to make a more informed choice.

Alan – please take a bow for doing EXACTLY what I hoped wouldn't happen when I posted my question and starting a flame war. Why do I suspect your are, ironically, excatly the sort of person smileys were invented for (an explicit indication of the poster's intent).

At the risk of reviving the argumants earlier in this thread… I just fitted a Zither chuck from ARC and it appears to be very well made and accurate indeed. It feels a little stiff without needing to be forced, but I take that as showing the jaws are a very close fit.

Message is don't be afraid of finishing a backplate for yourself; get the spigot very close to the finished size and then skim a fraction of a thou off at a time until the chuck just fits. Make sure the spigot is not too long as well!

Zither claim to be ISO9001 certified and it does look like they have decent quality control.

The chuck actually comes with good instructions on fitting – exactly the procedure I followed, although I only found it on the back of the test cert afterwards!

My only criticism would be that the numbers stamped on the chuck are a bit big and ugly, that said it's good to have the jaw numbers and master pinion very clearly marked on both jaws and chuck (my other chuck has numbered jaws but the chuck isn't !)

I bought a large bore Myford at their sale, it it came with a 5" Bison sc chuck and I have found this to be as accurate as I need.The quality is very good,so much so that I purchased a 4 jaw independant from the new Myford.This chuck is good to use and is of the same quality as the 3 jaw.From my experience of these chucks I would recommend Bison .
