Hydraulic piston seal

If it not allow please remove as it's a bit off topic. Anyway dismantled hydraulic cylinder and made new rod, before I reassemble I was going to replace the seals, does anybody know how this hydraulic piston seal comes off? It looks bronze type and doesn't seem to be split. I've tried putting a pick in the small half holes around it but doesn't seem to spin around. It's off a jcb digger and only about 30mm in diameter.

I used to work in hydraulics years ago. Then it was know as a copper seal and can only be removed by cutting it off. They were stretched on and then we used shims to fit them in the cylinder, where they returned to their original size.

Very interesting! Thank you. There doesn't seem to be any scoring etc on it. Would you reckon I would get away putting it back together carefully and replacing the orings and other seals.

Put plenty back just using new seals
The piston is well undersize ad is only a guide

Hijacking the thread a little! I have a cheap Chinese jack which leaks past the seal. I have dismantled it and it and the seal seems to be made from Nylon or PTFE. It is simply screwed onto the metal "piston". The nylon or PTFE is a hollow cylinder with an angle at the top to form a lip seal. Is it worth trying to make a new one, seems simple enough to do provided I get the correct angle on the lip?

Yes I would put it back and replace all other seals. The only proviso is that you didn't damage it taking it apart and it worked before !

Hi Rocketman, you won't be able to remove it by any means without permanently damaging it. I agree with Vintagenginer. Even if you get a replacement, they can be a challenge to fit without damage.
