How would you get this apart?

There is a locking ring that holds the bearings in but once you remove that, how to proceed?

Thinking about buying one but don’t want to destroy it by attempting to modify it.

Hi Vic Remove C clip grip sides of revolving centre in soft jaws in vice screw a slide hammer (or threaded rod with sliding lump of metal held on end by nut) into thread in taper shank slide hammer out.

If you plan to modify it why not make what you want or do you only have a wood lathe?

Thanks David. I’m not sure it’s within my skill set Brian, but even if it was by the time I’ve bought materials and bearings etc I’m not sure there would be any savings given how long it would take me.

Hi David. This type of live centre is also made in America and Canada but they both have a cross hole drilled in the body and spindle to lock it up. This not only lets you change the removable point for one of several others but it also enables you to drill a block of wood, screw it onto the centre then mount it in the head of your Lathe to turn your own mounts. The Axminster one lacks this important feature. Instead it has a couple of flats. Useful for changing points only. Axminster almost got it right. Including postage the other two versions are about double the price of the Axminster version and they carry a less useful thread pitch on the nose.

Could you use an arbour with the same thread in the headstock to make points that will screw onto the centre?

Yes I did think of that, the thread is 3/4 x 16 tpi. Just thought it a bit more accurate to turn any parts in situ on the actual centre.

Not seen a MT2 arbor with 3/4 x 16, I wonder if they are available?

Found one – £25!

At that price it would need to be a blank end arbor job and thread cut.
