How does this collet work?

I dont have anything in my workshop that takes Morse 1 but I keep moving this item from drawer to drawer and every time wonder what it would be used for.

An 8.50mm drill shank is a perfect fit but how would it be tightened up?

It's for holding straight shank drill in a taper socket. Does it not lock onto the drill when gently tapped into the MT socket?

It is a Morse taper split sleeve drill driver. The drill to suit the driver is parallel shank with a small pair of flats on the end. Used in production setups for small drills, cheaper to use with replaceable straight shank drill rather than morse taper. Used to use these quite a lot on multi spindle drill heads with smaller, sub 10mm drills.

Ah, I understand now. I did not realise that the drill would have driving flats and could not see how the collet could be tightened other than by hitting the exposed edge which seems a bit crude.

If anyone seeing this thread has a use for it and pays postage or collects they can have it.

A taper length drill in that drill driver is intended to have the same overall length as a taper shank drill.

What does the writing on it say?

I have a few of these and they are all for letter-size drills. If you squint at the picture, it looks like an 'R' on it, which would be closest to 8.5mm (but could equally be an '8&#39.

No writing on this one, but it slips on an 8.5mm drill shank perfectly.
