Hinge Straps

Is there any reason why brass should not be used for smokebox door hinge straps? Some materials must not be used, such as aluminium, as the heat might affect it, but what do others prefer?

Well I just use mild steel David – but some prefer stainless for obvious reasons.

However, I don't see why you shouldn't use brass – apart of course from the issue of it's colour (if unpainted) and/or (if painted) the fact that it doesn't take paint as well and if it does get 'chipped', then you get to see the brass showing through…

Mainly a matter of personal preference I suspect…

I would say it depends on what the smokebox door is made of, if a brass casting, use brass, if cast iron, or steel, use steel.

On the 2 LBSC designs I can remember, I think he suggested brass. (Mable Hall was one of them & mind's gone blank on the other)

OK, they were both 2.5" gauge and people may feel differently about different gauges.

Not directly related, but a good source of small hinges when cut up can be found on spec cases. Especially good for Pansy tool box hinges.
