      Morning,

One of my good friends has taken the plunge and has purchased his first lathe.

It looks like an old Warco. However does anyone know the exact model number or happen to have a copy of the instruction manual? (We are just trying to get a handle on how you adjust the speeds as its a total different set up to my old Southbend)

The lathe has a 4MT headstock and 3MT tail stock.

Please kindly see the photo. WhatsApp Image 2026-02-04 at 06.54.02

      Thanks

      Steve

Looks a bit like the old Warco 220, made by Mashtroy in Romania IIRC. I don’t recall the mt4  headstock though, thought it was mt3?

Look up Mashstroy on lathes.co.uk. clear resemblance.

Looks like a Warco WMT 300 without the milling head. Also sold as a Clarke CL300 or “metalworker” and I think Chester did one too, certainly had the versions with the risers

            Hi, it’s not a Warco 220.

It could be a Warco WMT300 or WMT 500 without the milling head though.

            WMT500

            WMT500 2

Looks like it is more likely to be the WMT300 though, as the catalogue doesn’t show the 500 without the milling head.

            Regards Nick.

Despite the missing badge, does it bear a clear serial-number, perhaps stamped on the bed somewhere?

That, along with its vital statistics and photograph, may help determine if it is a Warco and if so, the model, by enquiry to that company.

The machine has no apron and no apron handwheel.

The closest so far is the eBay manual posted by JasonB. Fourth photo in the listing, numbered page 14.

The WMT300 lathe in the catalogue above _does_ have an apron.

                  Clarke version manual here.

No apron on this version – manual covers lathe & lathe/mill models.

As Said Clarke metalworker is very close ( no apron)

And this is a picture of said warco but with the milling head ( no apron)

Hi, I did notice earlier that there was no apron, so I had another look through my catalogues to see if there was anything else, and I found this.

                      WMT300-1

However, I found no sine of the lathe without the milling head, so maybe they didn’t do one, and as the one shown by the Steve, hasn’t got a Warco badge on it, it might mean it isn’t one of theirs.

                      Regards Nick.

Nothing useful inside the belt/gear cover?

This mill-head combo is identified as a WMT300 on ebay:

                          Screenshot From 2026-02-04 22-12-14

The yellow labelling is close to Steve’s example.  Judging by their size, layout and shape, the WMT300 and Clarke Metalworker appear to be the same machine – rebadge and paint job, OEM unknown.

Hi, Chester UK Ltd. also did a very similar machine, with four different options, plus the lathe only. Chester machines were also green at this time, not that it means anything though.

An operator manual and spares manual are available on line for the Clark CL300 and CL500M la\the / milling machine combination machine.

The lathe is a Clark CL430, the combination machine is the Clark CL500M

                                Sorry to cause any confusion
