Help identifying this item

Good Afternoon,

 

Does anyone happen to recognise the item in the pics. I believe I acquired it with a Myford 254s I recently bought, but cannot be certain. The sort of thing that is clearly very useful for it's purpose but just clutter if not known.

It is for holding thin items to the mill table by gripping the edge rather than the top. Can also be used on thicker stuff where you want to machine the top without clamps getting in the way

Right screw locks it into teh tee slot, left tightens it against teh work and pulls the work downwards as it tightens

Ha, obvious now you explain it. Well it's too big for the Myford slots. Must have just slipped in there somehow. Would it normally be used in a pair or a less complicated book end type affair?

It would be fairly easy to make another stop of course, but that wouldn't have the same pulling down effect..

You can either clamp between two of those or one and a stop on the opposite side, for wider work two stops and two clamps would be used.

That style clamp was usually used with a fixes stop block or fence for the other side of the part. I think this type of clamp is generally called a toe clamp, although there are many other styles.

Could you remove some metal from the clamp body to make it fit your Myford?

Yes you are quite right I probably could, but it's going to be a nearer fit on a milling machine project I have underway where it will be more likely to see use. I had a play with a fly cutter on a slab of offcut 10mm steel that I could have used something like this on instead of counterboring some holes each end to recess below the surface. Once I clean off the bright turquoise paint that someone thought would improve it's performance.
