I am sure some of you have put heat reflecting foil behind radiators, I bought my roll from B & Q. Cut to a suitable size and fixed with adhesive tape to the wall behind the radiator. Over time the adhesive tape fails and the foam backed foil falls to the floor.

My idea to fix this is to obtain some 15mm wooden strip and staple the foil to it and when you look behind the radiator you see the two metal supports and the wood strip with foil attached falls and rests on the two metal supports.

Given that radiators are really convectors is there anything for the foil to reflect?

Try feeling the temperature of the wall behind the radiator when it is heating, the wall will be warm from radiated heat, certainly a good idea to use foil to redirect the radiated heat, saves wasting it especially on outside walls where it will conduct to outside and be lost. Perhaps lost heat doesn’t matter to some but I am all for insulating and conserving heat, lost heat equals wasted money, it’s a no brainier.

What a good idea Clive, I was wondering how to place the foil behind the my radiators. There is very little room behind the radiators which makes the task somewhat difficult, but your idea sounds like an easy solution-must give it a try.

Seems a very good way to fit it retrospectively. I fitted the foil behind mine while installing my radiators. Bonded to the wall with PVA adhesive, then fitted the hanging brackets. Still very well bonded after 18 years and never need to paint or paper behind them. Glad I did it.

As most of the energy from the radiator is convected not radiated the effect is small. See this Wikipedia article:
