        Hi Guys,

I’m new to the forum and hoping to get a little advice. I’ve had a search on the net and I also have the manual but not had any joy.

I’m servicing my Harrison Milling machine and wondering if anyone knows the correct oil volume for the vertical head attachment? I can’t tell from the sight gauge when it’s correct. I put in 300ml but it leaked out until about 150ml was left in it. About 500ml fills it to the brim.

The sight gauge is quite dark and not easy to see through but I’m wondering if it’s possible that the oil isn’t reaching the sight gauge, has anyone experience that before?

At the rear there is a rotating cup type arrangement which is there to seal the rear of the head but it leaks. I’m in two minds if this is only because I’ve over filled it or whether it is worn a little and allowing oil to pass. From looking at the design it doesn’t look like it would stop oil from slowly passing as there is no actual seal. I’ve taken it out and cleaned it but apart from that not much else I could do.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

        Cheers,

        Mitch

I will check my manual tomorrow. You can get the new sight glasses easy enough, and they are cheap, I will get you the company that supplies them (not Harrison!!) As I remember it there are supposed to be O ring seals on the aluminium blanking piece that fits over the gear input mechanism., but I am only quoting from the manual pics cos mine is missing. You can get a manual from [email protected]

            Thanks for the reply Phil.

A new sight glass would make things easier.

I took the front section of the vertical head off and from what I could determine is the front and rear sumps are separate so I filled the front section up separately and I could see the oil level (still not easy to see but I could) and then I filled the rear section. I ran the mill for a couple of minutes before heading home. I've not been back since to check if the oil levels are still correct though to ensure the oil stays in each sump.

I have a manual but it only details the oil to use and has a parts diagram and list at the rear.

            Cheers,

            Mitch
