Harold Hall’s Milling Head

Hi all,

I've just spent a relaxing morning watching videos on Harold Hall's web site. I was interested in his milling head for the lathe, and was wondering:

1. Has anyone scaled down and made one for the mini lathe?

2. If so, how well does it work, considering the feed rates and forces applied?

I already have a vertical slide for my SC3, which I use for limited milling. But something like the set-up Harold shows would be ideal for me as I do not have the room for a lathe in my tiny workshop .

Although I can see no objection to a general 'scaling-down' … I would be tempted to keep the diameter of those four vertical columns as large as practical. This would, of course, change the overall proportions; but it would make the mini-lathe version usefully stiffer.

First, sorry for delay in replying, been playing with the new acquisition of a BMW Z4! (03 plate, not 'new'. Couldn't afford it!)

A very good point Michael, and sensible. I shall dig deeper into Harold's design and see what pops up. Now, where did I put all those old Meccano parts. (Exits stage left, whistling and humming……)
