Hi. Regarding the Stuart Turner governor spring belt. Once you screw the ends together, how do you get them apart again. It seems that when you screw them together the spring opens up slightly, but it seems impossible to unsrew because the spring tightens up. And is there other types of belt that will work as well on this sort of Governor.

      Thanks

      Garry

Common rubber/neoprene O rings have been used in similar applications. Order by the inside diameter and cross sectional thickness.

On my recently completed ST Williamson I used nitrile o-ring cord from e-bay, about 2mm dia. cut to length and joined with superglue. The joint seems reasonably durable though it's only a dummy govenor and I don't run for extended periods.

Cutting the cord should be done with a scalpel blade or similar to give good square ends.

Thanks for the "O" ring idea. I will try that and see what happens.

Another option is tape/video recoder drive belts which are flat rubber and thus a little more realistic. Packs of varying sizes are available from that renowned on-line auction site.

O my traction engine a 2" Burrell tractor I used a piece of leather fom a handbag strap. The straps are folded over and sown up. unfolded they are thin and are near scale for this application.

to undo spring belts just put under a bit of tension and unscrew, never had any trouble with mine. you might have been a bit over zealous with your tightening.

Presumably, you want to shorten the spring belt?

If you cut the spring, as close to the tapered end, inside then spring, it ought to be possible to unwind the short end from the tapered end.

Then you can recheck belt length, cut to length and rejoin.

Thanks for the ideas. I have ordered some "O" ring and will try this first and if that is no good I will try some of the other ideas.
