Since following this forum, I've seen several images that seem to be computer generated specifically for a post. The one on key types seems the latest example.

How is this done please, is it some form of CAD?

Yes – typically generated in 3D CAD (there are many software choices available) – then either a screenshot, or an image export from the software.

Yes, have a look at Fusion 360 and at Onshape. Both are free.

Yes as the other have said once you have a CAD package it is often as easy to sketch something out with that and take a screen shot which can then just be treated like any other .jpg photo and posted in a thread. I have rather a lot in this album which have mostly been used to illustrate something in a thread as for me a picture is often worth more than a lot of words, particularly when I am trying to string them together.

On other forums where it is possible to attach different file types you can post a 3D pdf so the reader can look at the item from all angles, zoom in etc but we can't do that here

Can also model stuff using other freebie modellers & render in a second package. I have occasionally in the past created stuff in a dedicated finite element package, passed it through my own translator and into a package like DAZ Studio (a freebie figure animation & rendering package that also imports the '.obj' format) for rendering. It's amazing how much more impressed the 'suits' are by rendered images than stress models.
