As the title, what is a good way to clean/re-black dials on a lathe ?

<p style=”text-align: left;”>When I made my dials, I just painted them black then cleaned off the excess with emery paper .</p>
I have blacked other parts by heating them with a propane torch and dropping them in used motor oil.

Of course there are chemical blacking kits available but I have never had the need to spend money on them, being of a parsimonious nature.
