Hi, I have an Elliot Omnimill and a fab bit of kit it is too.. however the leadscrew now has a bit to much backlash in the middle most used part. I was thinking would it be possible to replace it with a ball screw? Any one done anything like this? Input always appreciated

If I'm not mistaken all ball screws are metric.

Have you asked on the Elliott group? Someone who has CNC'd their machine might have a spare unless you are also aiming to go that route. If you can get a spare you can remachine it to have an even 'wear' all aong and then make an anti-backlash nut.

The table screw is keyed along its full length to allow the table drive mechanism to work so replacing it with a ball screw wont work unless you are going to either do away with the drive or modify the machine to have an external drive. Mine is worn as well and needs a new nut but havent got anywhere near to doing it yet.

Hi Ian , thanks just the sort of info I am looking for, I haven't stripped the table down to investigate! Maybe I need to as a first step and start to consider an anti backlash nut.

I’m not sure of the machine, it may have been a VMC, but it was retrofitted with a ball screw. Not simple as I remember but quite doable as they say.
