I want to put a extra light in my shed but want to connect to the original light. I have live to the light and from the light a cable to the switch. If I connect a wire from the light to the new light will this be ok, or do I go live to the other light and a cable back to connect up to the original light on the switch cable. In other words do I continue two wires in the original then two the new lamp, or a live spur of the original lamp. I've looked on you tube but the live goes to the switch and mine don't. Thanks for any replies

          Hi Bob,

You will have typically 4 connection blocks at each end.

          1. Live
          2. Neutral
          3. Earth
          4. Switched live

The lights connect between the neutral and the switched live, the switch connects between the Live and Switched live. The neutral and earths are connected together.

          Does that help ?

          Gary

            Hi Bob

If you want both lights to come on at the same you only need to take a LNE cable from the existing light to the additional light.

If you want to add a second switch for the new light you need to state if the LN supply from source goes to the existing light.
If it does then do as at top and also run a Twin brown/red &E from the new light to the new switch position, at the light one wire is connected to the incoming live supply and the second connected to the light live supply terminal.

Here's a very comprehensive site for Light Wiring, and well worth exploring.

If you are unsure about electrical wiring it would be better to get a qualified electrician. Electricity is dangerous and can kill or cause a fire. Also your insurance may not cover you if installed by non qualified technician.

Pardon me Gary, but you do not connect neutral and earths together in any circuit. They have their own connectors in appliances and light fittings and should be kept separate – unless I misunderstood your post?

                        Care to explain sir?

Edit: My apologies if I offended you Gary. I guess you mean that neutrals should be connected together and earths should be connected together, but with respect, you have to be careful and accurate on a public forum when giving electrical advice.

                        Regards,
                        Ed.

By the way Gary, you do not shout on here, using CAPITAL letters!

If you need to emphasise something underline or italics  please.

                            Ed,

" I guess you mean that neutrals should be connected together and earths should be connected together "

Is correct, and you are quite right perhaps I could have explained that a little better. However as the original poster had thanked for the help and said he now knew what to do, I left it at that. I stand corrected on reflection my answer was a little ambiguous.

                            Gary
