How do they make them? I know the shank is soft so is it a different type of steel or is it just HSS that's left soft somehow. If anyone has a link to a "how's it made" video that would be great.

From what I know the flutes are ground, they are made of one piece of steel, the flute area is hardened, whike the shank is left unhardened.

Hi Vic,

the smaller sizes have the HSS Flash Butt Welded to the softer shank and the larger (usually morse tapere shank) are Friction Welded.

It's also possible that some manufacturers may have Induction Hardened part of the HSS blank, to achieve the same result.

Searching for Flash Butt Welding, Butt Flash Welding, Friction Welding and Induction Hardening will bring up plenty of information on the processes for you.

I asked partly because I recently bought some new ground HSS drill bits which are self colour and you can't see any difference in colour along the length of the bit.

Friction butt welding – now there's a thought ! Avoided by using silicone polish on the seat I suppose. I believe new ends can be welded this way onto Austin 7 Half Shafts.
