Try using a laser board pointer mounted off the machine and aimed at some distant point in your workshop, that will get you back on datum; they are now cheap enough to be useful for that kind of duty.

The swing on the column can be useful if you have a long job on the table, rather on the lines of a radial arm drill to reach the distant parts; something you will not be able to do using a rigid column machine. For 'normal' work I do agree it is a nuisance
