In the post today I had a letter from the DWP to inform me that I was soon to be 80 years old and therefore entitled to a Age Addition on my weekly pension in the week following that momentous date.

The Addition is the magnificent sum of 25 pence per week, upon which I will pay tax to leave me with an extra 20 pence a week.

My wife suggests I leave it to the housekeeper but I rather think she would be insulted!

What suggestions would the Team like to propose that I use this for?

If you save it carefully for two months you might be able to treat yourself to a cup of coffee whilst out shopping.

Thanks to Jamie Oliver I have to pay an extra 20p in sugar tax for a glass of coke. If you drink coke you’re possibly even now.

You gain 25 P but you also lose in other ways, Lloyds took away my acct. privileges like travel ins. and roadside assistance. Downgraded my card from Platinum to a Classic card. Damn them as I had to go for Green Flag cover. What with Car ins. increases etc plus power increases we are worse off, Do they not realize that the population is ageing? and that we are still a force to be reckoned with?

Brian – I think I might be tempted to return the first 20p coin to Mr. DWP with instructions to insert it in his inter-gluteal cleft and take a running jump without dropping it.

Now that reminds me of a game we used to play in Rugby Clubs, but using a handful of (old) pennies and an empty tankard.

Brian – 4 years to go for me. but that news will spur me on!   Suggest you make a pile of your 20p coins, add one each week, and see how old you are when it falls over.

I like that idea, the danger is I might fall over first and then what do we do?!! I remember well how unstable the old piles of pennies were in the pubs of yore and a wobbly oldie trying to add to the pile simply invites disaster. The housekeeper would then swoop in and make off with the lot, possibly to have enough to blow it on a sticky bun.

Trevor Crossman 1 doesn't recommend holding your breath for extended periods and with 4 years to go I doubt you'll get to the tape to claim your prize!

I wonder how much I would get. I worked in England for a couple of years and Centrelink forced me to apply for a UK pension when I turned 65 otherwise I would not have received my PART Australian pension. I am 80 in September and have just recovered the expenses incurred in getting the UK pension.

You are probably wondering how much it is – a magnificent 22 pence per week, paid annually in December or about $23 or 11 loaves of bread.

My youngest son is treating me to a trip to England in June or July to visit relatives. He wants to visit Duxford and a couple of race car manufacturer/tuners as he builds drift racers – last one was 920 hp from a standard Holden V8 with twin turbos + intercooler..

We plan to visit Tracey Tools in Torquay and see my grandfather's old house in Torre.

Any suggestions for places to visit would be appreciated.

Same thing happened to me. Someone said "Don't spend it all at once"!

At the end of my second year as an Apprentice, for passing exams at Tech. I was awarded an extra two shillings a week. My Income Tax deduction promptly increased by one shilling and eight pence!

In those days, Income tax was like Joseph's coat, with many bands.

One of my pensions is £8.10, GROSS PER ANNUM, £6.10 NETT. The Insurers now managing it, offered to commute it to a one off lump sum payment of £56. Since I hoped to live for longer than seven years, I chose to take the Pension. Fourteen years on I think that may have been the right decision!

Our nation is very even handed; gives with one hand and takes away with the other!

But let us be grateful for small mercies.

Good point Cyril, but there has been an army of them to keep body and soul together ever since I earned my first pennies as a new kid in employment!

Putting matters into perspective, I am a lot more fortunate than the so called Windrush generation, what a shameful paragraph in history that scandal is revealing.

The Windrush, though they say the boarding cards were all destroyed it was pointed out that the passenger lists are still held in Archives and can be viewed. There should be no problem proving you were on those passenger ships at that time. Having upsticks and moved here to work I am sure they deserve to stay after all this time rather than the illegals who have crept in and do us harm.

Those of us not yet retired are unlikely to receive even this paltry sum. With the increase in people reaching 80 and the massive increases in population there just won't be any money to the extent that those who are saving for a private pension probably won't be getting a state one or will be taxed to remove most of it.

You could use that extra cash to up-grade your workshop,just think of all the extra goodies you could buy.

OK,you might have to put a bit more to it,but still,it,s a start. After a few months you might be able to afford a brand new 6mm drill bit !! Just think of it !!!

The 25p age addition was introduced in the same year as decimal currency, so all the old folk then would regard it as "five bob" (5 Imperial shillings), which was actually worth something. 47 years later its not a lot!
