I know one of our uni workshop technicians used an old 4" record vice a student broke as a source for cast iron piston rings… and I have the main slide as an anvil clamped to a work bench… no idea what happened to the rest…

Depends on the quality of the cast iron and the type of vice. Good CI can be repurposed as useful parts or just raw material, lesser stuff may still provide jigs and angle brackets. The worst (with big voids and a texture like Christmas cake) can be melted down to make Super Adepts.

A long time ago, I had a broken 6" vise (later replaced with a similar one in good condition). I bolted plates on both sides, across the crack, and then carefully welded the thick plates wherever possible,

Lasted years and was still serviceable (but not pretty) when scrapped.

I would try oxy-acy welding with cast iron rod and borax flux. I weld CI mthat way fairly regularly.

Where is it broken, that considerably affects any repair options. Broken castings are amenable to welding with nickel rods with some pre-heat to reduce cracking.

 

The No 8 is a lightweight vice with jaws that are somewhat oversize for its strength. The No 24 and 25 are much nicer vices if you can find them without having to sell the house to pay for them.

I've a big heavy old six-inch Record vice that someone managed to snap in half and then brazed it back together with bronze. I bought it like that, unknowingly, at a garage sale and it has worked perfectly in my shed for three or four years now. I reckon it would have taken massive heat and someone who knew what he was doing to braze that lump back together though. But it can be done.

Mark mentions preheating the casting. Years ago I knew a man whose traction engine started to crack along the flange that holds it on the boiler. The firm he took it to put it in a muffle furnace, got it red hot, and welded it while it was still glowing! Sounds scarey. It must have worked; the engine is still about.

I see that I left "cylinder block" out of my post. Sorry! On this particular engine, a Robey 5ton Tractor, there is no form of support between the flywheel end of the trunk guides and the boiler, so it was trying to wag up and down all the time the engine was running. Bigger pull, more wag! It took from1918 until about 1983 to crack it, so it lasted quite well.

What is it with gougers that do blue-paint rebuilds?

The paint isn't an operative part of the vice, even when applied with a yard broom.
