Hi All, Got this today at my local car boot along with a lot of other instrumentation.

To avoid mis describing it when I list it could someone please tell me the correct name for this nice item. I THINK it is a Comparator Table for checking heights etc but do not want to get it wrong.

      Regards, Martin

            Yes, a Comparator.

Presumably the clock reads in tenths of a thou, or an equivalent metric increment?

Unless it has been abused, or is worn, it looks to be a good bargain. Lots of envy from us watchers, no doubt.

Now you need to find a set of slips (Jo Blocks as some call them) to be able to set it up to whatever dimension you want to check. Unless horribly worn/abused, even if they no longer "Wring" together, they were made to a level of accuracy greater than almost every one of can measure, let alone match, (millionths of an inch).

Brian & Howard, Thanks so very much! Of no use to me so onto that auction site!

              Cheers, Martin

Have you considered that it could be converted to a hand tapping machine ?

We sold a couple to a local cannery in the 50's, used to check height of bottles and tins against a master copy. Sadly the cannery has long gone, and now is a housing estate, like so much of our industry.

Sacrilege to turn a precision instrument into a drilling machine derivative. You can make a Tapping Machine from some pipe fittings (Tee pieces)

Would you use a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud for ploughing?

                    Martin,

Are you sure that you will have no use for it in the future?

If NO, make sure that it goes to someone who will respect it and use it for its intended purpose!

                      Howard,

Whilst I admire your attitude of respect … The sacrilege might be very small, and entirely harmless; depending on the size of tapping involved. … How much harm would a watchmaker or scientific instrument maker actually do to this stand ?

Whatever you choose to do I think the knurled ring should be below the DTI mount, used as an aid to lower the assembly, with the knob released the weight will allow the assembly to fall.

                        + 1 for a tapping device.

Chuck it up for sale here and let it be used for its intended purpose. It would be terrible to use it for anything other than it was intended for. A bit like idiots using micrometers as G-clamps.

Mike E, That did occur to me but it came with another smaller similar item that I might well convert to a tapping machine. (IF I ever have the time…)

Howard, sadly I have absolutely no way of making sure it goes to a 'good' home.

Ronan: because we sell our items on EBay by way of a (very small!) commercial enterprise it is against the policy on here to use the personal classified ads which I completely understand. We do not have enough volume to afford a business ad and a lot of what we sell is more woodwork or general collectable related than engineering, mainly planes etc and so on.

                            Cheers, Martin

I do admire the way the design separates the pillar guidance from the clamping action.

Hi ronan, with all due respect to your opinion, if one obtains items with their own personal finance, why should they be labelled as an idiot when they use them for something they were not designed for. (all safety factors accounted for) In a previous employment I had, there were people who buy brand new kit and had them stripped off part of it and use it for something completely different to the original manufacturers intention. Of course they void all warranty, but it does the job they require.

                                Regards Nick.

                                P. S. Personally I see no problem for someone to modify this item to suite one's purpose.

Although I have many fine quality tools, I never considered that they needed to be put on an Alter. To me there is nothing sacrilegious about using a fine quality item to make a fine quality tool, and yes, I would use a Rolls Royce for towing a plow if I needed to; but I don't, I have a Kubota. I take very good care of my tools and vehicles, but they are there to serve me in life, not me to serve them. Cobbling pipe fittings for a tapping machine would suffice if the need arises, but personally, I would prefer to make something a little more refined if possible.
