Compressor tooling connections

I have an oldish air compressor that was fitted with a cheap flimsy airline and fittings. Just got around to replacing the airline with a quality flexible 'hose' and the air hissing has already disappeared.

The next job is to replace the original 'quick connect' fittings with better ones.

My question: is there a convention for having either a male or female quick connect on the air hose (and thus the opposite on each interchangeable air tool)? I ask since the air tools I've seen in a local shop seem to be mostly female quick connect, and wondered if there is a mechanical reason for this.

Any advice gratefully received.

All mine have a male connector on them like the image.

Normally it is the male on the tool as many of the female connectors are self-sealing when nothing is plugged in to them, thus easy to change tools without turning the air supply off.
