An interesting device for centering a shaft on a lathe. (about half way thru the video). Does anyone know what it is called or possibly a design for one.

Its a test or "tell-tale" indicator Paul, an ancestor of the dial test indicator it amplifies the movement of the tip by one or more levers rather than a gear. There is a rather complicated one here in Google Patents **LINK** and a simpler one in Wikipedia **LINK** .

There are quite a few on eBay, search Collectables for "test indicator -dial" and an undimensioned drawing and a description of a single lever tell-tale indicator in MEW 69 (November 2000).

I've checked all my old American reference books going back around 100 years, and although I cannot find an identical one, there are several similar designs in the 1925 Popular Mechanics Lathe Handbook No. 1, and they are all referred to simply as an 'indicator', 'test indicator', or a 'centering indicator'

I have ( and use ) two of these made by Verdict one biased to the right the other to the left. They where quite common in the 50s
