@SilyOldDuffer,
Tactics which you have noticed is one of many symptoms of far wider disease of Western economies in general.
There is less and less to sell and more and more hot air blown in. No substance, no manufacturing anymore, just rules & regulations forcing us to do nothing and more debt everywhere. Fraud out of plain necessity becomes about the only viable business model, at least for larger entities.
It is no longer economy, it is just pretense which is going to blow up and lots of hardship and pain will follow.
Sorry, but I think that's a ludicrously OTT conclusion to draw from a bit of idiosyncratic placeholding behaviour by Bay sellers.
There may indeed be pain and hardship to come, but if it does it won't be from shortage of stuff, it'll be food, water and safety. I doubt anybody would pay the crazy prices those Bayers put up – you'd have to have insufficient braincells even to know what engineering is, to do so.
I have found – in those periods when I have money – that there are plenty of people willing to supply real goods and services in exchange for it.
