I need to make some taper plug cocks for my large steam engine and am wondering what sort of taper to use. Obviously too fine and it will jamb. I was wondering about using a taper pin reamer that has a 1/48 taper. Would this be too fine?

      Thanks for any help.

I think around 7-10degrees included angle would be better, your 1:48 will tend to lock.

best to make a taper reamer at the same setting when you turn the spindles

Jason; I do like the look of your taper plug cock! Is the body a casting, filed/milled from solid or two pieces silver soldered together?

            Regards

            Maurice.

Cut from a bit of 5/8" square, I did later solder on the threaded drain pipe connection

Gosh, that looks superb. Excellent suggestion Jason about cutting the plug and a D reamer on the same setting. Just a question about the D reamer, I guess that you used reasonable hard steel but did you heat treat it?

Magic! They look good Jason and by chance I have to make a pair myself, but without the drain pipe connection.

Silver steel, hardened but did not bother to temper.
