Hi all I’ve changed the spindle today or tried got the old one out ok got the new one in but don’t seem to able to get the last bit of slack out the rear bearing looks as though it need to in about another 10mm the spacer behind the bearing appears to be up against the gear
Do I need to draw it in with something seems really tight I don’t want to damage anything
      Any tips appreciated

          Kevin,

If I am following you description correctly I think you need to get the 4 step pulley cluster, thrust gearing and it's washer more carefully aligned, it should all slide in without any forcing.

Check also to see if spring loaded oiler pads have not got in the way of inserting your spindle, it is very much a juggling match I'm afraid

And the obvious question of course, is everything in the same order as it was before you pulled out the old spindle?

          Regards

          Brian

The rear cone fits very fest on spindle as You will know from the removal act.

A piece of all thread, two flanges and a short piece of pipe and You have full control.

I once used back of an axe as hammer and moved headstock out of alignment.

I’ve tried putting the tailstock up against the spindle front and light tapping of rear bearing but does not seem to go on any more as I said the spacer looks as though it’s up against the gear behind maybe the gear needs hammering on further?
I can’t tighten the nut enough to pull it all up together

I have found the problem it looks like the spindle I have been trying to fit is a MK2 not a MK1
So have a spare MK2 spindle if anyone needs one

Can you not modify it to fit Kevin?

Only trouble with modify it I didn’t write down the measurement s of the MK1 shaft and I would need the lathe to able to modify it
