bentley – Model Merlin Engine

Having just finished a Bentley 9cyl. engine I am now considering the next project. I was considering the Spitfire engine but drgs, castings will  be a problem. Any suggestions? P.S. I an an ex Rolls Royce engineer.

Good luck with that new project.  There are a couple of videos on YouTube of an interview with the engineer who made a (I think 1/2th scale) model of the Merlin which may give you some encouragement if not information.

Besides that, I, for one would be interested to see some photos of your Bentley engine in both fully-built condition with construction photos, too, if available.

There was a casting kit and drawings done at one time. Have a look over on HMEM forum, it came up in the last few days. “Dynamotive Merlin”

I suppose in this day and age castings are not really needed. There is the option to carve from solid but probably better getting some 3D metal prints done as they would be aluminium and no need to hollow them out..

Simpler but these dropped on the mat earlier today, better than a lot of castings I’ve had.

I’ve just done a quick google search and this link came up to extensive drawings.

Whether or not there would be a charge, I didn’t explore.

John,  I built the Bentley engine from a book by L. K. Blackmore. Be warned if you do try to build from the book a lot of the dimensions are wrong. I.E. He used a datum from both ends of the crankcase & the dimensions did not add up to the total. The air in the workshop was blue!  I have not taken any photo,s . What I cannot find are any working drawings for any other aircraft engine. John.
