I am about to start the restoration of a Meddings Driltru bench drill. Unfortunately mine is missing the thumb nut for the belt cover.

If anyone has one of these drills I would be greatful of a closeup picture of said nut, with some dimensions, so I can make one.

      Thanks, Craig

About 1″ dia, knurled edge about 1/4″ wide, domed top, bottom dia about5/8″ and a nice radius from bottom up to underside of the knurl. Thread to suit. Noel.

Like the other current Meddings thread, I would direct you to Vintage Machinery’s web site where there is a wealth of manuals and other material for instant download  That link takes you straight to the exploded parts diagram of a Mk2 Driltru, from which I took this magnified screenshot of the belt cover retaining thumbscrew:

Combine this with the dimensions provided by Noel and you should be able to come up with a suitable replacement, even if it’s not an exact replica.  The picture on the lathes.co.uk that I looked at wasn’t quite as clear as the one above.

Thanks for the replies. My research leads me to believe they were fitted with a knob as pictured below (Meddings drill but different model, best picture I could find off the net) This also matches the drawing as provided by John.

I have modeled one up and as best I can tell, the diameter should be about 1.25″ and should be about 3/4″ tall. I think i will make one and see how it looks. From a functionality point if view it doesn’t matter, but I like to restore them close to original if I can.

Well I made one. The dimensions look about right.
