G'day all.

Had a severe attack of 60s/70s work-related nostalgia and started to quench it with a couple of potential wind vanes. The first was in brass sheet, the second in thicker ali. My limited knowledge says that the ali version would be the better base. If this is agreed, the intended finish would be S&R helo yellow (Halford rattle can) but what surface preparation is required and (more importantly) what sort of final coating would best withstand constant salty air exposure? Suggestions most welcome with simplicity the priority!!

If restricted to aerosols I'd sand or blast it and etch prime, colour coat then use a car sill or motorcycle fork paint protection lacquer.

There is a product called ACF50 which was designed for corrosion proofing aircraft. It is also well used by motorcyclists to protect their machines.

It isn't cheap but does what is says on the tin. A small squirt goes a long way.

I've had a look at the ACF-50 site and their products appear to be very effective but require continued maintenance. Nick's sequence seems to be more the sort of thing I had in mind – presumably standard Halford's/Wickes fare??

Plus one for etch primer, nothing will stay on aluminium for long without it. At this time of year consider using a workshop heater to get reasonable drying time. It has been 0 to 1 degree here in rural Midlands early some days.

In seaside conditions: I would be very tempted to use what you have, to make a mould … and then produce the item in G.R.P. with a coloured gel-coat.

Aluminium, prime with zinc chromate, then paint with a 2 pot reaction lacquer, but with you being close to the sea, if you want it in metal, go for stainless steel, 1.5 mm to 2 mm, or plastic.

Here's my version, Cessna 185, it's made of twinwall plastic sheet that was a Real Estate sign.

Food for thought there, particularly the moulding. Perhaps oddly, the 'master' former for the two metal jobs was cut from white polyfoamyplasticky 'stuff' which was an offcut from the new house fascia boards. Maybe back to 'square one' then? If so, what would be best paint/colouring method to give the required S&R yellow??
