Being a lover of ancient technology while sorting the workshop found two makes of voltmeters I bought at a car boot some years ago to see the work inside one of the cases make me think how nice.
Talking of ancient a neighbour 98 old came to see me what an inspiration he still rides a bike and wont give up.

As a finish on a Bugatti dashboard, fine. But, does seem a touch wasted where it would not normally be seen.

'Spotting' or 'snailing' seen inside some old pocket watches and on tooling, etc and when they were made, wasted where they would not be seen was not a part of the philosophy in those days. Whether that was commercially viable is another matter though (unless on a Bugatti, of course)

A similar philosophy an ex toolmaker friend of mine has whatever he does what you can't see is just as perfect as what is seen.

No, as a finish in itself. Google "engine turning" or "jewelling" for more info.

What threw me as others mentioned was the fact they did it on a usually hidden part.

Tracked down a video I remember from a while ago by a fairly famous youtuber who showed how he did it though under a different name of "burnishing"

A finish like that shows scratches less, and it covers imperfections.

Nice example of old quality Windy.

Engine Turning seems to add an appearance of quality to many items.

I also agree that it serves to preserve a surface better. I did some random E/turning on the Throttle Plate I made for an old Carburettor I rebuilt before 'Bluing' and quenching in Oil. Certainly renders it resistant to corrosion and looks nice….even though it is out of sight.
