aligning boring bar on mill

Hi,

prob a beginners question and I can't find the answer by searching.

I'm trying to understand how to set up the boring bar in the boring head. Some boring bars have a flat on so I suppose when the screws are tightened it will self align but mine are round.

It would thus be possible to tighten the clamp screws anywhere on the diameter of the shank of the bar and would just be a guess as to the angle that the insert makes to the material (even to the extent of the insert not even contacting the material).at all.

How do I ensure the correct angle that the insert makes?

Perpendicular to the tangent would be the ideal starting point, I expect?

To maximise rigidity, use the shortest possible extension.

And be aware that some of those brazed carbide boring bar tips straight out of the box are not correctly ground and need a final touch up on a green grinding wheel to make them sharp and actually cut.

I have a 2" boring head fir milling and was never happy with the nasty brazed cutters. I bought a set of these which have 1/2" shanks and secure them with the flat of the insert a few degrees from a line between the centre and the insert. The wording of the advert is a bit misleading, as mine have identical shanks and the heads vary in diameter. Anyone interested in them would be advised to contact RDG for clarification.

..If you centre the spindle over the fixed jaw of your vise / edge of a parallel /slot/angle plate first, you will have a diametral reference plane against which you can then visually check the set up of the cutter…

You may find it difficult to remove a bit after the grub screw has been properly tightened. To avoid further trouble you can grind a flat on the shaft to remove the grub-screw burrs, and this also helps to locate the cutter as it was, every time.

I was not sure if a fixed angle would be the optimum one, so I just made a small mark on the tool shanks with the grubscrews, removed them and then lathe turned a reduced diameter where the mark was. Then they won't get trapped by the burr and can still be fine adjusted for cutting angle.
