In the process of starting to Build the "Reeves" 6" Vertical Boiler. Intend to fit a Ceramic Burner. I have the Book of "Alex Reiss" Ceramic Burners for model steam boiler.

In it he refers many times to Stainless Steel mesh 20 holes per inch and refers to the fitting and glueing it in place around the gas pipe insertion point entrance. My query is. What does this mesh do? It is glued to the side of the burner. What am I missing.   I can see the purpose of the Stainless Steel spring as a gas/air mixer.

The Burner is going to be approx, 140mm in Diam. What size of jet do I need?

Perhaps it's to stop fingers/spiders/mice from entering the burner area?

Or maybe it's meant as a flash arrester.
