Hi,

Does anyone out there have a spare gear or know who could supply one. I have a 4 Way Toolpost that is surplus to requirements if anyone is interested?

Lathes.uk website list 26T gears for your Raglan. Fibre or cast iron @£42 (+ vat?). Ouch!

Before lashing out £42 + Vat I suggest you try HPC gears of Chesterfield or Davall in Hatfield, either of them might have it on stock. I have bought gears from HPC in the past, unfortunately postage is expensive. unless of course you know some one who will help out with alternative transport. John.

Hi John,

The tumblers on my LJ are 14DP in steel or cast iron (CI I expect).

I am currently making some for another LJ in acetal and aluminium. Plastic gears are meant to break before the other gears, I suppose. I think the lead screw is protected with a brass shear pin, but the power feed shaft likely needs a weak drive link fitting somewhere in the gear train.

It is worth setting up for gear cutting as a couple of replacement gears would likely pay for an involute cutter and arbor. Easier if you have a rotary table. I have a set of DP16 and a couple DP12 cutters but am now looking for a set of DP14 cutters, now I have a 5"

It might be worth asking on the yahoo and freeforums raglan machines fora?

Hi All,

I have been on the HPC website and they list as standard 14DP,26 tooth steel spur gears , about £19 + dely. I have sent them an enquiry for Tufnol which they list as non standard, so we will wait and see what they quote. They look like a useful resource. I will post more info when I get their quote.

Hello John,

Be careful with the Pressure Angle, modern gears are cut at 20 degrees, those for the Raglan could well be 14.5 degrees.

Hi Notdoneyet,

If I supplied the tufnol blanks for both our needs would you be prepared to cut mine with yours for a consideration fee from me. I have a piece of Tufnol 3/4" thk which would be more than big enough, which I could turn our blanks if you are interested (.2 off for me + yours)

After Brian brought to my attention the possibility that the gears from HPC could be 20 deg not 14.5 pressure angle I am covering my options.

Please let me know if this proposition is of any interest to you, presuming a suitable cutter is available?
