I have twice written to Muffetts to try and buy some of their steel spur gears – I am building a Chenery Gnome engine and he calls for 9 of their standard products. They have not replied to either email, has anyone else attempted to buy from them?

      Thanks for any help.

      Richard

Is this the Muffett in question, Richard ?

… it doesn’t look like they do ‘standard gears’ these days dont know

I wonder if the business has been restructured.

As Michael says I don't think they do "stock" gears anymore and would likely be quite expensive to get them to make up a set.

The spur gears should be easy enough to cut or source from elsewhere and the worm and wheel could be hobbed with a tap as Stephen Wessel did with his 1/3rd version

Assuming they are DP take a look at HPC who do carry a good range off the shelf if you prefer to buy.

Be worth looking at SMD Direct as well **LINK** it looks as though they have a pretty comprehensive range and are priced individually. An internet search of 48dp gears throws up a lot of options as they are used in rc cars amongst other things.

Thank you both, good information, useful to know. The ones at SMD are alloy so I will do it according to drawing and use the steel ones from HPC. It will be slightly cheaper than buying the gear cutters – I don't have any at all and because I need 16, 24, 32 and 72 tooth gears it will be four new cutters at £25 each.

I think you're probably right there Michael, their factory has a rather intimidatingly corporate look now, not like the old days behind the bus station when you could just wander in in search of bits of bronze.
